UNI LIFE – UP TO EXPECTATIONS?

University has been such an interesting experience for me. I have found it is a place for growth, a place to learn and a place to explore. I know that it certainly has taken me by surprise in different ways, so I thought it would be interesting to ask other students at my university and other universities if it was all that they thought it would be.

“Is university how you expected it to be?”

Shannon Ollinger, 20, Photography at LCC, from Hertfordshire

“No, you’re left to your own devices rather than actually sat down and collectively taught something. You are left to a with a point to explore and develop your own understanding and it doesn’t really make sense to why you have to learn it, until you go and figure it out yourself. It’s a good of way of teaching but it isn’t what I expected it to be.”

Aoife Taylor, 18, Fashion Photography at Leeds, from Cornwall

“Uni isn’t exactly what I expected it to be like. I thought there would be a lot less work during the first year because I thought they’d gradually get you into the workload but on my course, it’s been the opposite, so I’ve actually felt like there’s too much work to handle! I thought it would be a lot easier to make friends, but I’ve found it kind of hard at the start which I wasn’t expecting, and I think there should be more clubs and socials because we don’t have very many.”

Anais Hooper, 18, Business Management with Marketing at Cardiff, from Cornwall

“I expected it to be fun and interesting, and to make me feel really independent. But I also didn’t expect the amount of pressure and stress it would be to do simple tasks like cook and wash on top of being a student.”

Mo Butlin De Wolff, 21, Fashion Sportswears at LCF, from Bristol

“Yes it is really. I started it last year, I was only there for a month but I found out what I as I going to be doing so I had a awareness already. Being here for longer there is less work than I thought there would be and we don’t get homework which is a shock. I wasn’t in halls last year and I am now and I really love it because it’s a really good way to meet people from everywhere and I love that we have over 500 people form over 50 countries.”
